Big Sing California – what an event! On July 21, 2018, approximately 9,000 singers participated in the biggest choral event in California history. Simulcasts from “hub” locations in major cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Berkeley, Fresno, and Riverside) joined our individual voices with the Los Angeles Master Chorale for 90 minutes in one mighty chorus. The project was the realization of the Master Chorale’s commitment to a multi-year initiative to get more people singing together, regardless of musical background or skill level, as a means of artistic expression and community engagement. Eric Whitacre, the visionary behind this event, and several guest conductors led us in choral masterworks like Morten Lauridsen's “Dirait-on” and Eric Whitacre's “Sleep,” along with popular favorites like “Lean On Me,” “Sing,” “Hey Jude,” and many, many more.
As one singer from the Los Angeles area put it, “Harmonizing with thousands of strangers was a deeply felt, primitive refresher course in community. We experienced, full force, the fundamental urge to just get along. We were reminded of our human obligation to ensure a safe space for singing, metaphorically and literally, all together.”
Several members from the Diablo Women’s Chorale joined from the Northern California hub at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley, and we had a total blast! Judging from the huge attendance, we expect that this won’t be the last time to bring singers from all over the state, so be on the lookout for news of the next time you’ll have the opportunity to join your fellow Californians in song.
