Mary Sorenson announced in April that she will be pursuing other projects at the conclusion of her DWC contract in June, 2015. Since January 2011 when she began as director, she oversaw an emphasis on modern American styles of singing, including jazz and gospel styles, singing off book to better connect with listeners, and the introduction of movement and comedic aspects to DWC concerts. Workshops with Dr. Kirby Shaw and others honed singing skills for many members and raised interest and enthusiasm levels. A threefold increase in membership, a doubling of concert attendees, and standing ovations were the happy result.
"I will miss the singers immensely!" says Sorenson. “I've been so privileged to work with Stephen Evans each week as our accompanist. Kirby Shaw taught me that it's not all about the concert, but about what you learn and share together in every rehearsal. In singing, especially, you are sharing a part of your soul."
Sorenson and Evans are gearing up for their last concerts with DWC on May 15th and May 16th, entitled "Get Happy." Tickets are available here. Watch this site for news of the new interim director and accompanist!
